6 Qs for Andy Tillison of Po90°
Among the bands that I got to see perform live at Summer's End 2009 was Parallel or 90 Degrees. Their frontman Andy Tillison is next out in my 6Qs for.
Who are your musical influences?
Van Der Graaf Generator and Peter Hammill have played a bigger role than average in my life. Most of the great 70s prog rock bands too... Genesis, ELP, Yes, The Nice, Floyd (particularly Watersfloyd). The Canterbury bands are crucial to everything I do. I owe a lot to the 80s alternative bands like Joy Division, Gang of 4, Mekons, Magazine - post punk progressive stuff like XTC and Talking heads. The late 80s anarcho punk thrash scene - Chumbawamba, Flux, Voivod, Generic, Sore Throat - and a whole heap of Jazz stuff from Bill Evans to my favorite - Joni Mitchell. Nowadays I listen to a lot of Ian Brown, Radiohead, Opeth and Porcupine Tree. My influences are a lot of music, from a lot of time. I could go on for pages. I won't.
What has Po90° been up to lately?
We have reformed after a 7 year break, made a new album, done two gigs at two festivals and we plan to keep on going!
What's your favorite song to perform live?
With Po90 it has to be "Petroleum Addicts" I think it manages to convey more than just anger - something that protest songs do all too often. It has a real sadness to it, and an emotional response you can see in the audiences face.
How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?
Our music has always been a fusion of the personalities within the band. Each person has brought something new to the group. We have always chosen to bring in younger people - people who don't necessarily know much about Prog Rock. As a result, there's only me left in the band who was ever a prog rock fan now. The others have their likes and dislikes inside prog, but have their own musical agenda which I am more than happy to add to mine. This is NOT a 70s retro prog band at all...
If you could play a concert with a band of your choice, who would it be?
As a musician... I wish I could play with Transatlantic. I'd like to support Radiohead with Po90. What a band they are.
What's your favorite board game?
